Case Study (Translation)

Barnard’s Center for Translation Studies is a space for the study of the modes and methodologies of translation, as well as a space for exploration of the major political, ethical, and theoretical issues in translation studies today. Translation Studies places language at the core of current debates about globalization and its impact on cultural identities.

The Center welcomes involvement from students and faculty in any discipline. Our conviction is that translation, both as a concept and a practice, is a common if often un-interrogated dimension of almost every area of intellectual inquiry.

The Center for Translation Studies at Barnard College is supported in part by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The Center for Translation Studies welcomes new associate director, Hana Worthen, Fall 2014.

Center Director Peter Connor talks to translators in a new series of interviews (link to all interviews) posted to YouTube:

  • author, translator and BC alum Lynne Sharon Schwartz (32:05 minutes), and readings (3:02 minutes) of translations from her new book, See You in the Dark (Northwestern University Press, 2012)
  • Swedish-American poet and translator Johannes Görannson (44:31 minutes), along with his readings (3:41 minutes), in Swedish and English, from the work of poet Aase Berg.
